the “humanities” also involve logic and Being Rational and Objective

@alexanderwept says-

how should we categorize classes that teach things like “science is colonialism”?

well, how should we categorize classes that teach things like “if your experiment doesn’t show the result you wanted, delete some of your data until it does”?

I’d categorize any class that teaches motivated reasoning as something that we don’t need to subsidize with public money. The difference is that I’ve never sat through a STEM class that advocated for it, but every grievance study class I’ve attended has viewed objectivity and critical engagement as hostile and oppressive.

In fact, every single class I’ve taken that’s prioritized empathy above rationality and objectivity has been a humanities class.

So uh. I don’t want to be That Guy, but considering that you’re writing off a couple of different academic disciplines as ‘grievance studies’, is it possible that that your professors might have picked up on the hostility you’re clearly displaying towards the thing they’ve spent their life working on?

Sure, but I’ll pose the same question. If queers/colored people/born victims are cheaper to hire and just as competent as their straight/white/born winners, why do profit-motivated corporations hire the born winners over the equally competent but less expensive born losers?

Japanese Americans went from internment camps to having more wealth than white people in the last century, why are blacks still lagging behind everyone else?

Why do refugees prefer white protestant countries?

Not cheaper to hire. Generally would be as cheap to hire, considered statistically. But not all else held equal because culture. Because of people like you, mainly, actually.

Japanese-Americans have done better in part because of continued cultural ties to a whole other nation and whole other economy, influx of new, post-wwII era, generally richer immigrants, and living mostly on the West Coast and big cities instead of the South. Judging from the Japanese-American communities where I am, incidentally the site of one of those camps, the families that were interned generally aren’t the richest in the community.

Refugees don’t; most go to their neighboring countries, which have their own entirely different political situations and enough of the neighboring countries’ conservatives react like you do and get them to go elsewhere. Some come to the west because they actually believe in western values and want to live by them. Many come because they hear we earn more for the same work and chance everything, usually for a big motivator like their families. But the west is mostly atheist-agnostic and if you really look at it culturally roman catholic ignostic, like what you think of when you think of Oktoberfest. Even those that aren’t aren’t reformed or puritans like the US, but generally either Lutherans or Catholics-but-divorce-is-ok-and-priests-may-fuck-hail-britannia.

Something tells me you don’t give a shit, though.

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31’ N and LONG 179 30’ W. The date was 31 December 1899.

“Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.

He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship’s position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed.

The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many:

The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.

The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.

The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.

In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.

This ship was therefore not only in:

Two different days,

Two different months,

Two different years,

Two different seasons

But in two different centuries - all at the same time!

It’s kinda funny that Hasbro managed to take a Depression-era board game about buying up all the property and driving your opponents to bankruptcy, intended in its original form to be a commentary on how land grabs enrich landlords and impoverish tenants…

…and turned somehow made it even more dismal.
